What Is an Allergic Reaction?

An allergic reaction occurs when the body reacts to a substance such as food, medication, insect stings, or chemicals.

Common Signs and Symptoms

  • Skin rash or itching
  • Swelling of lips, face, or eyes
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness or collapse

First Aid Actions

  • Reassure the casualty and keep them calm
  • Help them use their prescribed medication if available (e.g. auto-injector)
  • Monitor breathing closely
