The CSCS is a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme, which is run by the Construction Industry Training Board and is now mandatory on all construction sites in the UK.

With regards to obtaining one without an NVQ, it’s a little known fact, but you don’t actually need to have an NVQ in order to apply for the CSCS Card.

However, those looking to apply for a CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card, will be required to have an NVQ Level 2 Diploma.

These are rough guidelines set out by the government of how NVQs would relate to GCSE, A Level or higher education qualifications:

• NVQ Level 1 – GCSE – grades 3, 2, 1 or grades D, E, F, G
• NVQ Level 2 – GCSE – grades 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 or grades A*, A, B, C
• NVQ Level 3 – A level, International Baccalaureate diploma
• NVQ Level 4 – Higher National Certificate (HNC)
• NVQ Level 5 – Higher National Diploma (HND)
• NVQ Level 6 – degree with honours – for example bachelor of the arts (BA) hons, bachelor of science (BSc) hons
